Wood

Mac Hillenbrand

Mac Hillenbrand is a San Diego woodworking artist offering 2D marquetry wood inlay artworks as well as paintings utilizing tinted resin over wood that often use the depth of the grain to represent oceanic texture. This is to say he strives to reveal the "Waves in the Wood" and can reveal seascapes from the grain of a single board. Having a trades background as a painting contractor, Mac would refinish cabinetry and spend weeks on end staring deeply into the wood grain. Eventually, when he developed a latex allergy he went back to School at The American School of French Marquetry and has since been on an artistic odyssey pioneering how to transition traditional 17th century inlay techniques into contemporary marquetry art and other new methods for creating paintings out of wood.
